About Us

What is Social Change?

This is a very good question, but what many of us do not realize is that we have either voluntarily or involuntarily been involved in social change in some way. We have seen a lot of it in the past century, such as the Women’s Suffrage Victory of 1920. This victory was the result of the Women’s Rights Movement from the years 1848 to 1920. Also, Martin Luther King gave his infamous “I Have a Dream” speech on August 28, 1963 from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. This speech marked the beginning of great strides being made in the fight for equality.

The Chicago International Social Change Film Festival acknowledges that there is still a lot of work to be done within communities and on a global scale to change the views and values of those able to make an incredible impact on our world.

Filmmakers from around the world are able to use our film forum to initiate productive dialog with social entrepreneurs and the community through their films. We acknowledge that the slightest change within society can be the spark needed to fuel a movement and it is through such movements that the public is motivated to change. Film has been used as a medium to show individuals what is happening in the world outside of their own communities since the first film was screened in 1896. Through our Chicago film festival, this medium can be used to create awareness of the issues and encourage the public to make the necessary changes so that the world can be a better place.

We are dedicated to helping filmmakers relay their message to the world. In regards to this dedication and respect to the filmmaker, we offer a film grant opportunity to one filmmaker needing funds to create a story that can heal or enrich our lives. The story can
involve an actual person not known to the rest of the world and how they overcame a socially oppressive situation, or the story can involve anything in which the end result is one that can inspire change.

Together, we are able to create an environment that will provoke dialog that leads to productive and solution-oriented thought processes. In the meantime, we are honored to help filmmakers showcase their work and provide a medium for activism.
